Rapid Growth of Forest Biomass in 2030: Inevitable Impact on Tropical Forests? (Europe / Energy)
Projections indicating a sharp rise in the growth of forest biomass, particularly for energy production and use in wood products by 2030, have raised concerns about serious impacts on tropical forests. Although forest biomass is increasingly regarded as a renewable energy source, the rapid surge in demand could result in unsustainable deforestation, threatening valuable ecosystems and biodiversity across the tropics. In particular, there is concern that the growing demand for wood pellets in Europe and other regions may intensify logging pressure on tropical forests in Southeast Asia and South America. In these areas, illegal logging and plantation development that destroy ecosystems continue to pose significant challenges. Forests play a crucial role in stabilising the Earth’s climate system, and further loss of tropical forests could accelerate climate change even more. While the expansion of forest biomass use is an important strategy for reducing reliance on fossil fuels, strict management frameworks and robust international cooperation are vital to ensure its sustainability. It is imperative that we carefully consider how to balance the potential of forests as an energy source with the urgent need to protect ecosystems.
