今回は、オランダ最大の「車なし住宅地」が誕生したニュースをご紹介。皆さんは、普段の生活でクルマは使用していますでしょうか？ 日本だと、東京のような都会暮らしではあまり必要性を感じない。やはり地方だとクルマがないと…。という感じでしょうか？ オランダでは、基本は自転車。道路インフラも自転車が中心なので、都市内ではクルマの必要性は全く感じません。が、都市間の移動、例えばアムステルダムからロッテルダムなどの移動は、クルマがあると便利。さらには、オランダからフランス、スイスへ。あるいはスペインへ。といった外国へのバケーションには、ほとんどの人がクルマで移動します。なので、その時だけレンタカーを借りる。というスタイルの人も多いです。我が家も、自家用車は小さいクルマ。遠出する時は大きな車をレンタカーする、というパターンです。さて、今回は、そんなヨーロッパの生活スタイルをさらに促進する？かもしれない、ニュースをご紹介します。皆さんの街にとっても、参考になるかもしれません。
ユトレヒト発:2025年3月着工、国内最大の車なし住宅地が誕生 (オランダ・都市開発)
オランダのユトレヒト市は、Merwede Canal Zoneにおいて、国内最大となる自動車乗り入れ禁止地区の建設を来週から開始する。この新しい地区は、住宅、オフィス、商業施設、公共スペースなどが集約された複合的なエリアとなる予定で、約6000 人が居住することを見込んでいる。この地区の最大の特徴は、自動車の乗り入れを原則として禁止し、居住者や訪問者の主な 移動手段を徒歩、自転車、公共交通機関に限定することだ。これにより、地区内の空気質や騒音レベルの改善、交通事故の減少、そして何よりも持続可能なライフスタイルの実現を目指している。共有のモビリティハブや、カーシェアリングサービス の導入なども検討されており、自動車を持たない生活をサポートする環境が整備される予定だ。ユトレヒト市のこの大胆な取り組みは、都市における自動車の役割を再考し、より人間中心で環境に優しい都市のあり方を模索する上で、非常に重要な実験となるだろう。ヨーロッパの他の都市だけでなく、世界中の都市計画においても参考となる事例となる可能性がある。

The largest car-free residential area in the country will be created in Utrecht (Urban Development, Netherlands)
Utrecht, the Netherlands, is set to begin construction next week on the Merwede Canal Zone — the country’s largest car-free neighbourhood.
This new mixed-use district will combine residential areas, office spaces, commercial facilities, and public spaces, and is expected to accommodate around 6,000 residents.What sets Merwede apart is its pioneering approach: private cars will, in principle, be prohibited. Instead, walking, cycling, and public transport will serve as the main modes of mobility for both residents and visitors. The aim is to improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, lower the risk of traffic accidents, and — most crucially — promote a more sustainable way of living.To support this car-free lifestyle, the city is also exploring the use of shared mobility hubs and car-sharing schemes.This bold initiative by the city of Utrecht represents a significant experiment in reimagining the role of the car in urban environments. It offers a model for creating more people-focused, environmentally conscious cities — not only for other European municipalities but potentially for urban planning efforts around the globe.
